This unit focused on three important grammar points: modal verbs, phrasal verbs, and the passive voice. Additionally, the text provides specific information regarding the different types of relative clauses, defining and non-defining, the different kinds of phrasal verbs, intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable, and the differences in nuance between the various modal verbs used in the English language.
One thing that I took away from this lesson is that learning the subtleties and nuances of things like modal verbs and phrasal verbs can be brutally difficult for ESL learners. Native English speakers learn these things through natural acquisition. ESL students must learn them through study and instruction. In order to mitigate the difficulty, a teacher absolutely must provide students with examples of natural usage of these grammatical elements during not only the classes that focus on them, but as frequently as possible, and as long as is appropriate.
