First the lesson kicked off with discussing the difference between authentic and non-authentic materials. A combination can be used in the classroom as self-created materials is better customized to the needs of the students yet authentic material gives an opportunity to students to experience real content.
Lesson planning was also covered and here the ESA method was presented as the best practice to be utilized. Course books were discussed and what the advantages and disadvantages are. Teachers need to remember that though they can omit or replace content, if we do too much, students will ask why they paid for the book when it isn't often used. There are also a lot of internet resources available but must tread carefully and/or adjust the materials for the classroom.
Classroom management is also another key to ensuring students stay focused. We can use techniques from gestures, voice control, eye contact, and others to get students to stay present and keep in control.
