This unit covers the modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, and phrasal verbs. It provides definitions and relevant examples to clearly explain how each one is used appropriately and what meaning each one conveys. In addition to getting a good review of these grammar points, I also learned that while some modal auxiliary verbs can have the same meaning in certain situations, they usually convey different nuances. For example, although \"may\" and \"can\" are both used to ask for permission, \"may\" is more formal than \"can\"--so they aren't exactly the same. I think understanding these kinds of differences is important for a teacher because students will almost undoubtedly ask about differences among words/expressions that have the same meaning; they'll want to know how to decide which word/expression would be more appropriate to use in certain situations, so a teacher should be able to clearly explain how these kinds of words/expressions can carry different nuances.
