Proper pronunciation is an important aspect of the teaching of the English language. Practically speaking though, intelligibility should be stressed more so as it is highly unlikely that a non native student of English will ever be able to duplicate the native speakers' pronunciation skills. These can be used to help model the proper pronunciation however the student may or may not have difficulty grasping the information as it is somewhat advanced and poses issues for even native speakers of English. Observation and imitation are techniques successfully employed by children at an early age before reading and writing skills are garnered. Proper stress of syllables and the patterns of articulation in sentence structure are skills that are more easily taught and likely to be retained by the non native student of English.
