there are four basic skills in any language, namely reading, writing, listening and speaking. of the four, this unit concentrates on the receptive skills reading and listening and not the productive skills speaking and writing. the basic keys to successful receptive skills lessons are outlined as choosing material that interests and motivates the students; building interest before reading or listening, pre-teaching complex vocabulary or structures. varying the type of material used in class, using the material to practice different skills, using realistic comprehension tasks that aid understanding and incorporating activate phases that naturally lead on from the text. we learn that there are several reasons for reading and listening that have been categorized into one for a purpose and two for entertainment. there is also different ways of how we read and listen that require the use of a number of specialist skills like skimming, scanning and predictive for example.
