The productive skills are speaking and writing, and while there should and often is an emphasis on speaking in the classroom, there is sometimes not a lot of emphasis put on practicing writing in the classroom. Both accuracy and fluency activities can be applied to both speaking and writing, and a good lesson on developing either skill might put a creative communication/writing exercise after an accuracy one. It is important to always encourage participation and to motivate students with these activities. This is done with purposeful and relevant content. The teacher should pique the students interest as much as possible, as well as clear up any challenges they might have with the language points before an activity focused on speaking or listening (or both). This should be done without spoon-feeding the students too. Also games are a really valuable classroom tool to excite and encourage students, and there are a lot of games that can develop productive skills.
