Unit 14 addresses the use of course books and other lesson materials. Authentic materials are the everyday things that a native speaker of English would hear or read. When using authentic materials in a lesson, the teacher should select them carefully as the material may not always be at the level of the students.
Created materials are designed by the teacher specifically geared to fit the level of the class, and can serve as supplement material to a highly general course book. Examples of created materials are crosswords, flashcards, gap fill activities etc...
Course books tend to be geared for a more general audience of students, so they possess a variety of advantages and disadvantages.
The course book provides a syllabus, a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work, continuity and progress etc. Unfortunately, it may not fit the specific needs and interests of your students, they can be outdated, and can be predictable and boring for students.
