This unit covers ways in which to evaluate students' knowledge level of the English language as well as their progress throughout the learning process. I learned that three of the basic ways to do this are tutorials, evaluation by students and tests. A placement test allows the teacher to measure the students language level or ability. Progress tests allow the teacher to track students' progress throughout the course of the semester or school year. These tests are meant to cover material that has already been learned in the classroom up to the point of taking the test. Diagnostic tests are typically given at the start of the class and allows the teacher to gain a good understanding of where the students' knowledge level is so that he or she may better prepare their lessons and coursework for the semester or school year. Practice tests are given in preparation for external exams. Some common external exams are TOEFL, IELTS and TOEIC.
