In this unit we discussed the different types of examinations a student may be required to take. There are diagnostic tests, used to determine what a student does and doesn't know at the start of course. There are placement tests, used to determine which class or skill level a student will be in based on their language ability. There are practice tests to prepare them for the real thing. And there are progress test to see how much they have learned in a given period of time.Unit 11 is dedicated to teaching students receptive skills: reading and listening. The Unit distinguishes between reading for purpose and reading for entertainment and includes the description of various reading and listening techniques (scanning, skimming etc.). Teaching receptive skills can be challenging and requires preparation and thoughtful approach. The materials used for the receptive skills lessons should correspond to both the level of students and their interests.
