In this unit, I learned that the attitude of the teacher and the teacher's behaviour can have a profound effect on the success of the lesson. In the first video, the teacher used jargon, did not contextualise the target language, expected that the language would be 'easy' for the students, used too much confusing teacher talk and spent too long writing on the board, not allowing enough opportunities for students to learn and practice the target language. He didn't give clear instructions, didn't build rapport with the students and didn't use their names.
By contrast, in the second video, the teacher smiled, built rapport, learned names and used them, elicited the target language and contextualised it. He gave clear instructions, time limits, encouraged self-correction and feedback to the group. He used gestures to explain concepts and used creative free practice to activate the language. This resulted in a much more successful lesson.
