This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 3 is about classroom management and covers topics including eye contact, gestures, and voice, student grouping, classroom arrangement, writing on the board, individual student attention, teacher and student talk time, giving instructions, establishing rapport, and maintaining discipline. In this unit I have learned how to properly give instructions using lower level language than the students are learning and by being consistent and using visual cues. I have also learned to try to maximize student talk time when possible and I have learned about the importance of it. I believe that using a circular or horseshoe-shaped seating arrangement will be advantageous for me in my classroom because the classes will be rather small and so it is therefore suitable and it will cause the students to see me as a less dominating presence which can help to build rapport (as long as I do so while effectively maintaining discipline, of course).
