This unit broke down two of the four learning skills and covered reading and listening, which are receptive skills. It is interesting to go back to the basics of learning skills because as I have gotten older I have trained myself to scan and skim materials to get the gist of things. This is not a luxury for someone learning a new language and I have to remember to use details when explaining things to students. Over the years, I have also had to focus on being an active listener in my professional life to avoid missing vital information and clues. This is important as a teacher, as well. Keeping the classes interesting and the students engaged will not only help them to learn more effectively, but it will also help them to pick up on the language when they are outside of the class. The teacher’s job is to encourage this unconscious habit so the student can learn on his or her own time outside the classroom.
