Unit twenty covers troubleshooting, specifically situations that commonly arise and prove problematic. In the case of first lessons, it is vital to establish rapport for new groups, whereas existing groups are likely to be familiar and comfortable with one another and EFL teaching. Experienced teachers will not use a course book in the first lesson, but instead seek to know more about their students, such as their level of competency with English, and what they hope to get out of the course. A number of activities which achieve these goals are listed. It is recommended you start lessons with a 'warmer', which is a short, light-hearted and fun activity to help students use English. Strategies to help deal with classes in which there is a large gap in student ability are mentioned, as well as how to manage large classes, demotivated students, and how to keep students using their native tongue to a minimum.
