The study of pronunciation, intonation and dialects are extremely important for strong fluency. I add dialects because this is where pronunciation and intonation gain their uniqueness and cause great confusion with language learners. It is important for the teacher to be self-aware of their dialect and have the ability to “style shift” to a standard English. This ability then becomes an integral component to teach students. Case in point, my first job as an English teacher was with Bilingual Language Institute in Osaka, Japan. The company created its own text books, one was for pronunciation and the other for “reduction English.” The reduction simply meant speaking in a dialect in which words were incomplete or certain vowels and consonants were eliminated. Drilling these two books with students helped them pronounce and understand the broken pronunciation of native speakers.
