In this unit I learned of a variety of historical paradigms for second language acquisition, as well as the ESA method that is most preferred today. The ESA method consists of three stages of the lesson plan, engage, study, activate. In the engage section of the lesson the teacher chooses an activity designed to grab the students attention, to engage them in the English language. The study portion is where new material is introduced. It is also where accuracy and correction are most important. The activity stage is where students are encouraged to be productive with their learning, bringing into play the entirety of their language knowledge in a fun way. I very much liked the distinction made between a mistake, which is a simple slip up that the student can usually correct on their own, and an error, which is more ingrained, and might require correction by the teacher.
