Unit 13 spends a lot of time on the importance and challenges of teaching pronunciation and phonology in EFL classes. Given that lack of confidence in phonological knowledge is one of the major reasons this is a neglected part of teaching English, a significant portion of this unit is also devoted to defining and explaining some basic points of English phonology. Intonation and stress play an important role in conveying meaning and nuance. Any language-learner who hopes to obtain fluency, therefore, needs to have at least a working knowledge of how to hear and produce the various rhythms of English, and to interpret their meanings. The rest of the unit discusses techniques and activities for teaching this information to EFL students. The detailed information on the phonemic alphabet and the articulation of individual sounds was very informative and interesting to me.
