It is interesting to read about those teachers who don't particularly like tests and claim to know their students' language abilities because they observe them regularly and for extended periods of time. I have to confess, I am leaning towards this group. Recently I took some time off and the teacher filing in for me was asking about my students, just to get a picture of their skills. I knew all their strengths and weaknesses by heart. However, having said all of the above, I do appreciate tests, especially if continuity of teaching needs to be preserved when a teachers leaves a school. But perhaps even more importantly, it is a fine way for the students to be appreciated for their efforts or motivated for their lack. Also, in many parts of the world a proper school test result carries a lot of credibility and weight. So, yet again, both way have their place.
