For vocabulary, selecting vocabulary depends on the appropriacy for students and tasks, the teachability for the level and type of students, and the frequency of the vocabulary students will encounter. For grammar, teachers should focus on the meaning, usage, forms and patterns and both spoken and written forms of the grammatical structures. Language functions include inviting/refusing, agreeing/disagreeing, suggesting, etc. Students should be aware of appropriacy when learning language functions, such as formal/informal distinctions. Role plays and dialogues are useful lesson types for the activate phase when teaching language functions.
