In this unit we looked at modal auxiliary verbs and the passive voice. Modals are, can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to, needn't and ought. They add meaning to verbs and express idea such as obligation, ability, advice and more. They are also used to express degrees of formality. The passive voice is used when we do not know, we don't find it important or we don't want to say exactly who performed an action. Modals and the passive voice form part of the basic grammar taught in language schools. This unit talked about the various past tenses of the English language--past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. Like with the English present tense, using these tenses properly comes naturally to most native English speakers, but can pose some daunting prospects to an EFL learner. It can also be difficult for us as native English speaker to explain these concepts clearly if we do not have a firm grasp on the rules ourselves. Thus, it is important that the English teacher know these rules and concepts thoroughly.
