There are different ways for a teacher and the student to evaluate their levels and progress and to prepare the students for other for external exams. Some of the tests used for that are: Placement test: this test can start with very simple questions and is used to determine the entrance level of the student; Progress test: periodic test to measure what the students have retained from the classes; Diagnostic test: helps the teacher to see what the students already know, helping him to prepare future lessons.What is the appropriate balance of grammar and theory vs vocabulary and functional communicative objectives? I believe there is great value in fusing the two dimensions of language as learning points, so that the learning process may be not only natural, oriented to real challenges, but also provide an analytic framework for understanding the structures of the language. This way students may be said to be equipped with a scaffold upon which additional vocabulary and competencies may be oriented and rooted.
