Unit 15 looks at different ways to evaluate and test students’ levels and progress.
Students’ language abilities can be assessed before the start of the class to determine what level they’re at and what class would be most suitable for them. A placement test is a common tool for this. Students’ language abilities can also be tested at regular intervals during the course to test their learning progress and see what areas still need further practice. Progress test are commonly used for this.
In addition to internal test conducted by the language centre to check level and progress, students may also want to take external exams. Examples of external English language exams are: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE.
When students are planning to take such an external exam, they may wish to practice by doing practice tests.
