This unit covered activities that would help with the actual understanding of written information and texts, and of heard materials. Practicing understanding is as important, if not foundational, to checking to see when students understand information. The skills that the type of activity practiced here (learning about Tom Cruise or Elvis Presley) can help students build their knowledge of vocabulary, practice understanding practical use of known grammar structures, and also how to read and comprehend texts. The way students engage with the material is similar to the way they will engage in a grammar or vocabulary activity presented to the teacher: the material should be exciting, should capture their attention and their interest, and should help them recognize what they do know while also teaching them some new things that they do not already know.
