Grammar, vocabulary and functions are important when learning new language structures. Learners have to understand the language to be able to effectively use it. Among the three, grammar is the most important. Teachers must understand how to balance the three when carrying out a lesson although sometimes a lesson might be only focused on one or two areas. To introduce the new lesson, the ESA method can be applied. The straight arrow approach is commonly used for lessons that target grammar or vocabulary while the boomerang or patchwork ESA approach targets function based lessons. During the engage period of learning teaching vocabulary, pictures, contrast, mine activities are used. The study activities include matching exercises, crosswords and example sentences. The activate activities include role play class debates and discussions.
