Unit 15 deals with evaluation and testing. Students can be assessed in their language level in one of three ways: tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. Tutorials are meant to be carried out with the whole group or individually, and they are intended to review the work done, discussing the aims of the lessons, how well the students are performing, etc. Evaluation by the students is aimed at students evaluating their course through a questionnaire or guided discussion. This type of evaluation makes students aware of what is happening in the classroom. Tests can be placement tests, carried out before the course begins to place students into the correct class according to their language ability and are spoken and a multiple choice written test; progress tests, used periodically to check what language has been acquired and what language has to be reinforced; diagnostic tests, given at the start of the course to help teachers know the level of language and prepare lessons and materials accordingly; and practice tests, designed to practice for external exams. External exams are exams such as TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC. Other external exams are Cambridge International Exams such as KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, and Skills for life.
