The unit reviews the techniques to successfully teach vocabulary, grammatical structures and language forms. The teacher may not choose the vocabulary taught if he or she is teaching from a fixed curriculum or text book. However, if that is not the case, the teacher must consider the appropriacy to the students and the task, the frequency of usage, and the teachability of the word. The teacher may use real items, pictures, or mime in the engage phase to elicit engagement with new vocabulary in the Engage phase of the lesson. The teacher may use gap fills, word searches, or matching exercises in the Study phase. Lastly, the teacher may use role play, story telling, debate, or material preparation in the Activate phase to prompt the students to use the new words. In teaching grammar, the teacher may use scenario building, prompting, or pictures to introduce and begin the lesson in the Engage phase. In the Study phase, sentence word order exercises, sentence building, and gap fills can be used. In the Activate phase, the teacher can use story building, role play and debate.
