It is always crucial for the first lesson to be used for establishing rapport with the students. In a new class rapport also needs to be established among the students. An established class already have rapport as students already know each other. It is also important to find out about the students, needs, language levels, interests etc. Surveys/questionnaires, \"pass the ball\" and needs analysis are a few methods for doing so. Start classes with a warmer exercise to encourage motivation. Teachers may sometimes encounter students of varying levels within a class and one way, among others, to work with this issue is to pair a stronger student with a weaker one for activities. Reluctant students tend to be that way because of cultural or confidence issues; controlled practice, working in pairs, using a recording device and role-play are ways to encourage participation. Large classes are also difficult because it is impossible to give individual attention with larger groups. Group work and work sheets allows for the participation/learning of all. Finally, it is essential to abstain from using students native language in classes- the purpose is to encourage the use of english- to minimize native language use teachers can respond only to english, give clear instructions, ensure that assignments are at the appropriate level of the students, encourage and remind students.
