This unit and its advice about advantages and disadvantages of the course book use have confirmed what I've been doing with my students - on one hand there's a ready and mostly easy to use material, grammar and listening, everything adapted to the students' level, yet often they find some exercises or listening/discussion topics boring, which I have to substitute with other authentic materials that are more appreciated. Yet the issue is that in cases of omission/substitution it can be quite difficult to evaluate students' progress with the help or mid term tests from the course books, since we've been following it only partially.
