Reporting speech is often a difficult task for ESL students because of the constant changing of verb tenses. If spoken directly in the present simple, the phrase is reported in the past simple, whereas if spoken directly in the past simple, the phrase is reported in the past perfect. Another element besides verb tense to remember when speaking indirectly (reporting) is with time expressions. For example, yesterday becomes the day before. Since this topic is very complex, ESL teachers are cautioned to introduce it slowly to their students, and not until a sufficient amount of language skills have already been acquired.
