Unit 11 is about teaching receptive skills and it focuses on reading and listening. It talks about how we read and listen and the different types of reading and listening. For example, skimming over a paragraph to get the gist of it or only listening to key phrases. What I really learned from this is actually just a reinforced attitude: The students don't need to know every word and that it's encouraged to do so. The reason is at my school, I teach in Japan, some teachers and students want every word translated into Japanese, even very simple words like 'blue'. Even if it's just reading a phrase. I always tell them that it's fine not to know every single word. Now I know that it's encouraged and I wasn't being too harsh.
