This unit gives an overview of the grammatical structures, usage, and teaching ideas of the past tenses, including the simple past, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. I particularly liked the card games lesson ideas for reviewing irregular verbs, and telling a story backwards for the activation stage for lessons on the past perfect. The card games make the rote memorization part of learning the past tenses of irregular verbs more interesting. The sequence of past events in well-known stories, such as Cinderella, are good examples for using the past perfect (e.g. By the time the Prince found her glass slipper, Cinderella had already left the castle.) I certainly will be incorporating these ideas in my lessons in the future.
