I personally think coursebooks are rather bland and can create a feeling of boredom and disinterest in something that otherwise might be interesting. I prefer a very engaging and upbeat classroom environment with a lot of discourse and physical movement. I feel that coursebooks can trap learners and teachers at their desk in a quiet and sedentary way of thinking/participating. And when a student is not enjoying what they are doing, they are not learning effectively. I DO however think that coursebooks provide a nice general guide for a syllabus, as well as a good point to jump off of and spark more creative and interesting versions of their activities.
