The video lessons illustrate that the teacher has a great responsibility to set the tone of the class that will ultimately affect the learner outcome. In the first lesson, the teacher bypassed the Engage phase and used complex language that the students did not understand. In addition, the lesson was disorganized and the teacher appeared distant and disengaged from the lesson and the students. The teacher did not appear to have anticipated student problems such as when a question was asked about the difference between \"can\" and \"could\". In the second lesson, the difference was evident, as the rapport that was established at the beginning of the class between students and teacher opened the door for more receptive and participatory learning. Use of pictures and gestures gave the students something they could relate to, and they were able to contribute to the lesson content by naming the animals they know and their abilities. The activate stage in the second lesson was also very effective at getting students to utilize the language point they had just learned in their own creative way.
