In this unit we look at the kinds of lesson materials that can be used when teaching a class. Authentic materials are almost anything a native speaker would hear or read such as, magazines, newspapers, and menus. Since they are not designed for beginner students, you will have to carefully select the materials that is best suited for the students level. Created materials are often made by the teacher and used to supplement or replace materials from a course book. They can be tailored to the level or specific needs of the students. Course books have its advantages and disadvantages. They provide a tried and tested syllabus, and come ready with many ideas and lesson materials, so reducing teacher preparation time. Some negatives might be many parts of the course book might not be best suited or specific to the current needs, so you will need to replace or supplement your own materials. It can also become predictable and boring for the students, and teachers may become lazy to use their own creativity in the lessons. I think for most experienced teachers, making good use of course books, while mixing it up with some created supplementary materials, will take the best of both worlds. I personally enjoy having a general guideline or framework to follow, but the freedom and flexibility to allow my own creativity to fill-in where required.
