I have learnt that receptive skills include reading and listening. There are different motives/reasons for reading and listening: for purpose and for entertainment. It is important to grasp the overall meaning from a pre-existing knowledge of the world, not just using ears and eyes. Readers and listeners' understanding of the context will depend on predictive skills, specific information (scanning), general idea (skimming), detailed information, deduction from context. Problems with listening includes language, topic and tasks. Some solutions for language problems include pre-teaching vocabulary, careful selection of texts. For topics, it is important to create an interest in students and topics, and when selecting tasks, it is important to promote understanding and challenge that is realistically achievable.
