In this unit we conclude our look at the essential basic grammar needed most commonly for the EFL setting. Modal auxiliary verbs are used to add meaning to the main verb. For example, \"I might go shopping tomorrow.\" Might modifies the verb go to mean that it is only a possibility and no longer a certainty. Some examples of modals are: can, could, may, might, and have to. They are used to express ideas like obligation, possibility/probability, permission/prohibition, ability, and advice. While modals do not change in form according to person, differing modals can change the degree of formality. For example, \"can\" is less formal whereas \"may\" is more formal. The passive voice places less emphasis on the 'doer' of the action or doesn't even have one. For example, \"The door was painted last week\" (no agent). Depending upon the tense, the passive formation has a set of formulas that one can follow as a guideline. For example, if the tense is in the present simple, the passive form will look like is/are + past participle. Phrasal verbs have one verb followed by one or two particles (preposition, adverb, or adverb + preposition). Common sayings like, drop off, pull into, pick up, may be taught better if the topic is about cars/driving, as students can hear and understand the usage of phrasal verbs in context.
