Unit sixteen covered conditionals and reported speech. Conditionals are sentences containing \"if\" (or similar expressions) which refer to past, present and future possibilities. In these sentences, there are normally two clauses, the \"if\" clause and the main clause. Either can become the first part of a conditional. There are five main conditionals: the zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional and the mixed conditional. Conditionals can be practiced with exercises such as split sentences or nuclear bunker role play. Next we looked at direct speech and reported speech. In reported speech we report what someone said directly. In general, the verb changes to one tense \"back\" when reporting speech. For example, present simple tense changes to the part simple tense. Time expressions tend to follow the same backshifting rule. For example, yesterday becomes the previous day. Reported speech can be practiced with exercises such as reporting verbs and media interviews.
