Created coursebooks can assist a teacher, but the teacher should not use them as a crutch, nor should they let the book hold them back from being creative and tailoring materials specifically to their class. Different classes have different mixes of abilities and cultures, so the teacher needs to work to make materials appropriate to their specific students. Materials from real life can be as effective as a course book, if collected and deployed thoughtfully. Because students have different learning styles, mixing up types of materials and adding photos, recordings, videos or games can help move students along.
Coursebooks should be carefully selected with several criteria in mind, such as availability, suitability to the students in the class, price and usefulness. Having students buy a coursebook and never using it will cause resentment, while over-reliance on a coursebook can be boring.
