This unit covered how to teach receptive skills (reading and listening) to non-native English speaking students. The unit explained our reasons for reading and listening (for entertainment and for a specific purpose) in order to emphasize the importance of teaching these receptive skills. The unit also included a list of reading and listening skills (detailed reading, scanning, skimming, deduction, and prediction) and examples on how to teach each specific skill. The unit also described a few potential problems (reading word to word, sentence length, structure, flow of information, speed of speech, and accent) that may occur in a receptive skills lesson and provided suggestions on how to create a lesson plan in order to effectively avoid the problems previously mentioned. In conclusion, I learned about receptive skills and how to productively teach them in a non-English classroom setting.
