Students need to be aware of the phonetics of language as well as pronunciation. Pronunciation is the fall and rise in speech. It also includes the intonation. Using different intonation can change the meaning of a sentence such as someone answering ?yes? when asked a question or asking ?yes? as a question. Depending on what part of a sentence is stressed will also show what part holds significance. Speech is not as cut and dry as it is written. Some word when said sound a bit different depending on where someone lives. The words ?would you? are sometimes slurred together and sound like ?wouldja?. This is not necessarily incorrect and can be considered linked speech. I?ve seen the phonetic alphabet in dictionaries but never really understood until this lesson. I would normally find words with similar sounds to derive how a new word should sound. Using this alphabet I can better understand pronunciation that I never knew could cause others so much trouble learning.
