This unit discusses the importance and uses of different kinds of assessment. From before a course starts with diagnostic and placement tests to progress tests which can give feedback and information to the teacher about how a student is managing with the material to final assessment tests for certificates and even external tests for more formal qualifications and proof of proficiency. The unit also points out the importance of other forms of assessment that are not involved with 'tests' as such like tutorials and classroom monitoring to ensure that students are not simply memorizing information but actually understand the material as well.
