Coursebooks play an important part in the classroom. They can be helpful in that they contain tried and true material and lessons to teach the class. A teacher should be able to use coursebooks along with their own lesson materials though. Interchanging and mixing in authentic and creative materials with the coursebooks will give the lesson a variety of ways to learn the material.
Authentic materials are anything that a native speaker would hear or read on a daily basis. Some examples are magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, and brochures. These materials cannot be graded to the level of the students. Created materials, on the other hand, can be graded to the level of the students. Some examples are crosswords, flashcards, and word searches. Both can be beneficial lesson materials, depending on the lesson you are teaching.
