This unit compares two different teaching styles. One recommend by this course, which adopts a methodology which typically promotes class participation and good understanding of what is being taught. In the lesson, we see the teacher smiling, making students comfortable by calling the by their names, asking questions to students in a random order to keep them alert. He explains the concept of modal auxiliary verbs by focusing on the usage in a sentence and interaction with other words without harping on the terminology of the language point. He had a clear ESA lesson plan which even helped improve vocabulary with animals words and what they can or can't do. In the first video however, the teacher didn't explain the language point and constantly kept harping on how easy it was. This dissuaded the students to ask any questions or participate in class. He did not explain new words such as what an otter was, or what does crawling mean. Hence although these words were mentioned in class, they didn't really help students retain them. The students were a bit confused, intimidated and seemed to lose interest eventually. These videos were excellent examples of what to do and what not to do as ESL teachers, and the second video was especially useful in understanding how the engage-study-activate phases of a lesson plan work.
