There is much controversy surrounding this teaching method and the division seems to, roughly, follow along the generational division lines. Regardless of personal feelings on teaching students how to read, the value of phonics, especially to those learning a new language, cannot be denied. There is a difference between phonetics and phonology, however,...  [Read more]

Although both areas are similar in that they both study the science of speech, there are differences between the two. While phonetics specifically centres on how speech is made and heard, phonology is more involved with recognizing and understanding the patterns and the different...  [Read more]

tesol articles TESOL Articles - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ Phonetics - Phonology

Phonetics and TESOL Phonetics, the study of the sounds of human speech, and in particular “Articulatory Phonetics”, are not commonly taught to native speakers of English, let alone learners of English as a second language. However if the learner is serious with their English and wish to progress to an advanced level, learning phonetics, in particular the International Phonetic Alphabet, would be of immense benefit. English spelling is often contradictory, devoid of relation to the pronunciation of a word, and lacking in clear patterns. Patterns that do exist are numerous, with a large number of exceptions, and all of this makes it very difficult for the learner of English as a second language to master pronunciation. The International Phonetic Alphabet puts all of the individual...  [Read more]

As stated at the beginning of the unit, pronunciation is probably the most neglected aspect of language learning because it is difficult and most teachers never really study phonetics. Even as a French teacher, I briefly learned the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), but never really felt comfortable with it. ...  [Read more]

In this chapter, I learn about stress, rhythm, intonation and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Intonation carries a message in a sentence and is important in questioning, agreeing or disagreeing, confirming statements, and is also necessary in the expression of emotions or feelings....  [Read more]

I thought it was interesting that most international students learn English through the phonetic alphabet. I have seen them in the dictionary but never thought too much about it. It was difficult to read the phonetics because I didn’t grow up learning them. I am a very detailed person and I have had...  [Read more]

When teaching pronunciation, students must learn the intonation and stress of English words and sentences. Intonation refers to the pattern of sounds within a sentence, whereas stress refers to syllables, rather than whole words or individual sounds. The way a sentence is intoned gives the listener clues as to meaning and whether or not an answer is desired. Stressing certain syllables in words...  [Read more]

The content cannot be naturally learned by using the language or by having teaching experience. I have studied this long time ago, and I could still remember some of it but had to really study, no intuitive figuring things out. It is very useful though to see, and to learn phonetics as a system that can be taught. Teaching pronunciation is fun and I think that students do care and it can raise their confidence in using spoken English to know more about how to pronounce...  [Read more]

Dealing with phonetics and pronunciation can be difficult for teachers because we speak without thinking. I also found the lean towards British English a little difficult at times because British and American English have different pronunciations of some words. If you introduce it to beginner learners, I imagine there would be an intermingling of both systems when the write, and if introduced to established...  [Read more]

As a native speaker, I never received much training on the pronunciation of words...we simply picked it up as children. As such, it was extremely insightful to be exposed to the International Phonetic Alphabet and to learn how each phoneme is written. Furthermore, I had never given much thought as to how sounds are produced by the mouth. It was extremely interesting and useful to learn about the various manners...  [Read more]

Articulation and the International Phonemic Alphabet would have been better together, and the sections on Stress and Intonation could have been a separate unit altogether. It's true, pronounciation is often overlooked in the learning and teaching of English. I had a colleague say to me that we should not worry too much about the students pronounciation because everyon has different accents, but that we should focus more on grammar. However, his statement contradicts with this unit and the true claims that people for the most part when learning a new language want to learn how to pronounce...  [Read more]

I find it to be the most complicated unit to learn from thus far. I've spoken English naturally for many years and have never learned English using any kind of phonetic system, and in the past have always taught pronunciation to my students by example (i.e. asking them to listen and repeat, and to do lots of listening exercises). Depending on how a sentence is finished with a rising or falling tone indicates whether no not the speaker is done speaking, and if the speaker wants a response or not. Also, looking at the phonology of English, we can see that English has become a language that is not entirely phonetic anymore, and due to this, being able to use the international phonetic alphabet is helpful when teaching students what sounds the...  [Read more]

Amount Vs Number English Grammar Teaching Tips - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT TEFL-TESOL Courses

In this video we explain the difference in using "amount" and "number". The word "amount" is used when we want to refer to uncountable commodities such as water, electricity, money etc. Whereas, "number" is used to refer to individual things that are countable such as book, cat, chair etc. In the example "a greater amount of people are going to the gym" the use of "amount" is incorrect because we can count "people". In this case "number" needs to be used. A good example of the use of "amount" is "a greater amount of rain came down in November compared to October". Here "rain" is uncountable so "amount" should be used. Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course.
