There seemed to be quite a bit of information presented, especially the International Phonemic Alphabet. Learning the new symbols for the phonemic alphabet was not an easy task. The videos were helpful, especially how to use the symbols in a lesson setting. It would seem that because there are so many variations in English dialectical sounds throughout the world, that there could be disagreement in identifying the...  [Read more]

Intonation is a part of English speech that is so integral, and yet the amount of communication that's done through that is staggering. Since I plan to teach in Thailand, I can imagine that this might be a bit more difficult for some students to grasp, as it is difficult for me to learn Thai since Thai is a language based around inflection. In Thai, different tones on the same sound will change the word, so I very much look forward to tackling that...  [Read more]

Of course, I've seen it in dictionaries before, but I never paid much attention to it. I'm going to study hard to understand the phonemic chart so I can teach it to my students. I think for students, in the long run, this is an excellent way to learn new words. They only have to open up their dictionaries to know how to pronounce every single word. For me, as a non-native English speaker, this is unbelievably useful. The unit...  [Read more]

I had a Love/Hate reaction to this unit. With regard to Intonation, I would inevitably find that my intonation was different from the examples used. (I seemed to rise where they fell.) I did, however, like the section on Stress and it was fun to re-learn some of...  [Read more]

Pronunciation And Phonology/phonetic Alphabet Issues - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT TEFL-TESOL Courses

There are two issues that need to be stressed when working with the international phonemic alphabet. First is the fact that we are no longer concerned with how a word is traditionally spelled. Additionally we need to stress that we are only concerned with the sounds needed to correctly produce a word. So rather than numerous spellings, which can often be pronounced in different ways, we have one symbol representing one sound. Once we can isolate a sound, rather than juggling various spellings, we can work with our students on how to say that sound. Doing that successfully is related to manner and place of articulation, which will be covered shortly. To get a better understanding of the phonemic alphabet, let's take a look at our chart. In the bottom half of our chart we have our...  [Read more]

For someone who has spoken English my whole life and speaks and reads well, I have never seen it before. I must conclude that I would only use it as a last resort as it confused me as an English speaker. That aside, I now see the real value in taking the time to make sure that words and meanings are accompanied by an emphasis on correct pronunciation. As most students are not likely to put as much emphasis on correctly articulating every word but on...  [Read more]

K. - Japan said: In total, I have learned to rethink purpose and variation in the classroom. As teachers, everything we do must be purposeful because it has an effect on the classroom environment, attitudes and motivation, effective understanding, perceived and/or real fairness, a balance between what skills are presented, how students understand their role and the teacher’s role, and participation. All of this affects learning. So, the teacher’s attitude toward teaching and interacting in the...  [Read more]
