TESOL Videos - The Past Tenses - Past Continuous - Teaching Ideas
This video is part of our series on the past tenses in English. In this video, we take a look at the past continuous tense and suitable teaching ideas for this tense. The past continuous is very conducive to using pictures and talking about actions. We give our group of students cards with images and ask them to create sentences for what the people in the picture were doing at a certain time in the past.
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
Past Tense Review I really enjoyed this unit because it was very simple and easy to understand, also, liked the applications for the class. Past simple tense: Formula: Subject+Past tense. Example: I (subject) + bought (irregular verb). I (subject) + worked (regular verb). Usages: Completed past actions at a definite time. Example: Mark (subject) + worked (regular verb) + last night (definite time). Past continuous tense: Formula: Subject+Was/Were+Verb(ing) Example: I (subject) + was (past be form) + buying (verb+ing) Usages: Actions in progress at time in the past. Example: I (subject) + was (past be form) + buying (verb+ing) fruits yesterday (time in the past). A good teaching idea is to do mimes and make the students guess the action and say it using the past continuous tense. Past perfect tense: Formula: Subject+Auxiliary verb HAD+main verb in the past. Example: The concert (subject) + had (aux. verb) + started (main verb in the past). Usages: When we talk about something in the past prior to another in the past. Example: The concert had started by the time you arrived. Past perfect continuous tense: Formula: Subject+Aux. Verb HAD+been+verb(ing) Example: I (subject) + had (aux. verb) + been + waiting (verb+ing) Usages: Continuous action in the past up until another action in the past. Example: I had been waiting for three hours (continuous action in the past) before you showed up. (until another action in the past) Thanks again ITTT for making my teaching easier.
