This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
This unit talks about several important aspects one should consider before teaching to young learners. Those include classifying young learners into two groups, relationship between L1 and L2 and how methodologies of Learning L1 may apply to L2. It also introduce the ESA approach to teach a class and how to arrange a class to best suit the activities and provide a good atmosphere. "This unit discussed the various relevant topics that are important for every teacher to know such as learning theories and the division of age groups for young learners. Additionally, how a class should be arranged and which activities are adequate for each age group. The teacher has various roles to play in the classroom such as instructor, facilitator, mentor, psychologist, counselor, or policeman. These roles will always be existent during the teaching process for each age group; however, depending on the ages (group 1: 5-9 yr and group 2: 9-13yr ) the teacher will know how to plan a lesson whether it is EP or ESA model. Usually, a EP is used for group 1 because the student requires a lot of engagement and drills or practices while the ESA would be adequate for group 2. When planning a lesson the teacher has to take into consideration what each age group like and dislikes are because it will determine which activities will be most useful when planning a lesson. For example, motivation and engagement are imperative for group 1 because these age group responded better to fun and engaging atmosphere due to their low attention span and that they can become quickly bored or distracted. In the other hand, the 2nd group needs a more structured class that is still engaging, motivating and fun. However, is important to remember that this age might be shyer when presenting in front of the class; therefore, they should always be paired into groups with the purpose of minimizing anxiety but also getting the student partners to communicate within the L2 Bing thought.
