TESOL Videos - TESOL TEFL Reviews - Video Testimonial - Louisa
Louisa is from New York, USA, and has a passion for teaching. Since she had traveled to South America before, she decided to take the four-week in-class TEFL/TESOL course in Buenos Aires. In her TEFL review video she shares her experience at the center. She enjoyed her time in Argentina and learned a lot regarding lesson planning, teaching methods and classroom management. She enjoyed working with her trainer
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
One of the most important skills a teacher must learn is managing a class whether it be one on one or 50 primary students. This unit gives advice on how to set up and control a class even when the teacher is not the focus of the activity. Gestures are important in language because they let people understand more of your meaning than if someone just stood and spoke. Because of this teachers must master using gestures in the classroom according to the culture of his or her students and ensuring that the students ahead of time are familiar with the ones the teacher will use. Along with gestures there is also voice and how to use it effectively. A teacher's voice can be used to command attention or authority on the given topic, but also can help students understand the complexity of using a melodic language like English; which is not natural for L2 students to grasp at first. The unit also conveys the importance of STT and not overusing TTT. In this unit, teachers can also learn about how setting up your classroom can determine the way the students will respond to a lesson. For me, I enjoyed the section on discipline in the classroom. This section is so important for teachers new and old. I have seen many teachers fail and quit because they were unable to master this area. To be honest, I feel that you can never master this area, but always be working on it through the advice given in this unit. Ask your colleagues is the best advice I can get from this. When you forget your pride and realize that old and new teachers all need to work together to come up with ideas on how to handle students in the classroom is the only way we can continue to love our job. Otherwise, the behavior of the students will wear on the teacher and they will lose their love of teaching. In conclusion, teachers should always use the resources around them for helpful advice and emotional support in order to develop the skill of managing a class.
