When we started teaching in korea we thought we had a very strong grasp on the english language; this being mostly because we are well educated native english speakers. But it became clear, quite quickly, that although we do know how to use the language appropriately, we had no idea how to explain the grammatical rules we took for granted as common knowledge. This course has been extremely beneficial in learning exactly how to teach and properly explain all the different tenses, grammatical structures, intonation, pronunciation and general phonology. All of which are often overlooked or under explained by native english speakers who too often can only recognize an error because it “didn’t sound correct”, but couldn’t explain how they knew that. Because of this course we will now feel more confident when teaching grammar to our students. If a student asks us why something is the way it is, we will now have an accurate response. Lastly, we have always had a good handle on classroom management and building great relationships with our students, but have always felt we lacked the technical side of teaching, such as the lesson plan format, to completely come across as a serious teacher. The lesson plan examples have
