This unit started with a briefing on modal auxiliary verbs which add meaning to the main verb. They are used to either express an obligation, a possibility, a permission or a prohibition, an ability, an advice, a preference or finally to address polite and formal requests. It was then followed by an elicitation of the passive voice which is one of the two voices used in English (the other one is called active voice). The latter is focused on the subject rather than the agent, uses the auxiliary verb 'be' and can only use transitive verbs. The third focus was made on relative clauses which are divided in three categories; the independent clause, the dependant clause and the relative clause. Lastly, the three basic types of phrasal verbs (intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable) were made explicit.
