This unit focuses on how to teach speaking and writing, known as the productive skills. It covers why people communicate and the differences and importance of fluency and accuracy exercises. I learnt the difference between controlled, guided and creative communication activities. I also learnt that students may be unwilling to talk due to lack of confidence and peer intimidation and that pair work and careful planning can help overcome these problems. It also provided guide lines for creative speaking activities such deciding on your aims prior to the lesson. It outlined what should be considered in writing lessons namely handwriting, spelling, layout, punctuation and creative writing. It further explained why games should be a component of successful lessons and how they can be adapted for many uses.
